Newsletter of Blak Yak Theatre, October 2005

Hello All. Time for another Blak Yak show - time for a Blak Yak newsletter! It's October already and it'll be Christmas before we know it. However, before that, you've got to face The Truth. Latest in a long line of successful Terry Pratchett plays, The Truth is Blak Yak's final show for the year. What is The Truth? Who is Terry Pratchett? Well, read on....

Long before J. K. Rowling, Terry Pratchett was writing books about wizards and witches. Since 1983, Pratchett has written over 30 books set on the Discworld, a flat medieval world where magic rules supreme. Not only are his books insightful - commenting on and often parodying modern situations - they are extremely funny. And with 27 million books sold, they're also extremely popular.

In 1997 Blak Yak Theatre mounted the first Australian production of a Terry Pratchett stageplay. Mort was an enormous success and, over the years, was followed by Guards! Guards!, Wyrd Sisters, Maskerade, Sourcery and Hogfather. Now, Blak Yak is proud to present the latest in its popular series of Pratchett plays: The Truth.

William de Worde is the accidental editor of the Discworld's first newspaper. Now he must cope with the traditional perils of a journalist's life - people who want him dead, a reformed vampire with a suicidal fascination for flash photography, some more people who want him dead in different ways and, worst of all, the man who keeps begging him to publish photographs of his amusingly-shaped vegetables. Complicating matters are two Pulp Fictionesque hit men stalking the city's Machiavellian Patrician, a talking dog, a zombie who writes the obituaries - including what people have been up to since they died, an up-front female reporter, dwarfs, trolls, werewolves, Foul Ol' Ron, and a cast of thousands . . . alright, hundreds . . . ok 49.

The Truth will be presented at the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre (Canning Rd, Kalamunda) on October 20, 21, 27, 28, 29 at 8pm. Tickets are $15 adult and $12 concession (group discounts available). Reservations may be made by phoning 9206 0034 or, for more information, visit our website

Not that you need any more convincing but there's an attached image for you to marvel over. I'll be seeing you at the show (and that's not a question).

Speaking of shows, our last one was Blak Yak's two-night one-act season at the Sunroom. The season went remarkably well - not just from the point of view of the plays, which we already knew were great - but from the audience support. We had a great turn-out and, remarkably for a one-act season, didn't make too much of a loss! I know, I know - amazing, isn't it! Thank you again to everyone who came and supported us - a great night's entertainment was enjoyed by all.

The two one-act plays progressed to the September drama festivals. At the South West Drama Festival, Peter Niblett won Best Character Actor (Male) for his performance in Man Woman Flower. Melissa Merchant won Best Original Production for Never Ever whilst her cast won an Adjudicator's Certificate for Ensemble Work. (Other Blak Yakkers fared well too: Pat Golding won Best Actress for The Studio production A Day in the Life and Michael Taylor won Best Actor for the KADS production Swan Song.) At the ITA's DramaFest, Melissa won an Adjudicator's Certificate for Inspiring Play Writing and was shortlisted in the Best Director and Best Production categories. Well done guys!

There’s probably hundreds of things I've forgotten to mention but, honestly, I want to get this newsletter out sooner rather than later. See you all at The Truth. You will be there…. :-)
